IMPORTANT DO'S AND DON'TS
DO spend a bit over your hotel budget when in Laos.
We had such bad luck with booking hotels in Laos, more than anywhere in the world. We usually had a budget of £10 for a double room in Asia and that normally covered a decent room, sometimes even with breakfast. So, we stuck to the same budget in Laos. We were very wrong.
Our bad luck story: *not naming names* We booked a hotel in Luang Namtha as that's were our bus arrived from Thailand (see post below). Reviews seemed fine. We arrived around 10pm, checked into hotel went up to our room to find a cockroach actually ON THE BED. We hadn't even taken off our backpacks yet, we left straight away 🤣.
We were then wandering down the main street in the dark. We stopped at a hotel and asked the tourist outside what it was like, they agreed this was ok. So we booked a night there for £12, it was slightly better but we had a rubbish sleep, feeling anxious about the cockroaches (Laos has many!). On our next stop in and from then on we budgeted for around £20 per nights for a double room.
Therefore, I suggest paying that little bit extra to give you that peace of mind. We had a similar cockroach incident in Luang Prabang, and this hotel had amazing reviews. Luckily Gemma didn't see the cockroach, it was only Jamie who had a the panic and worry all over again. We think Laos is just highly infested with cockroaches - so be aware.
